Most fat-tire e-bikes are bought twice. Once by someone who got excited about the category, and once by someone who did the actual homework. The gap between those two purchases is usually six months, a craigslist listing, and a quiet lesson about what specs don't tell you.
The market is dense with bikes that photograph well and ride like a compromise. A motor number on a listing means very little without knowing how that power is managed. Battery capacity is cited in amp-hours but almost never paired with an honest range estimate under real conditions. And "full suspension" gets used to describe everything from a legitimate dual-linkage rear shock to a decorative spring fork that softens nothing. The vocabulary is technically accurate and practically useless.
What the checklist usually misses
There are a few things that separate a capable machine from a capable-looking one, and most listings don't volunteer them. UL 2849 is the safety certification that actually matters for e-bike electrical systems. It covers the battery, the motor, and the charging circuitry as an integrated system, not just the cells in isolation. A large portion of the fat-tire bikes on the market don't carry it, because pursuing it costs time and money that a race-to-the-bottom pricing model won't absorb. It's the kind of detail that doesn't show up in the hero shot but determines whether you're comfortable charging the thing indoors.
The battery question matters more than most buyers realize upfront. A battery that lives bolted to the frame means charging in the garage, or running an extension cord, or not charging at all until the weekend. A removable battery that comes inside and charges at a normal outlet is a different ownership experience. It's the difference between a vehicle with a routine and one with a logistical problem.
Range claims are almost always cited at optimal conditions, which means flat ground, low speed, light rider, full assist. Real-world riding on varied terrain with real assist engagement looks different. A battery rated for 60 to 80 miles under actual use is a specific and defensible number. That's a commute, a trail loop, a Saturday errand run, and still enough left over to not think about it again until tomorrow.
